HURT

I like this:

I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything

what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of shit
upon my liar's chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stains of time
the feeling disappear
you are someone else
I am still right here

what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end

you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
if I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

Who wrote this? It's quite lovely. Do you know Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet? There's an amazing meditation on pain and sadness in it.
It's difficult when the light is low and memories return to remember that spring will come, that life will regenerate, that the sun will assert itself against the grief of death. But it will. In the meantime, we huddle down, find warmth within ourselves, wait to be reborn.
Hang in there.

It's actually the lyrics to a Nine Inch Nails song. I happened upon it through Johnny Cash's performance of it. I love it, but it gets stuck in your head and I don't think that is too positive of a thing. I need to look for the letters to a young poet that you mention.

well worth buying. (It's Lorraine.) Especially letter #9. And I should have recognized it as being NIN.
